Antioxidant’s for chronic pancreatitis is an effective treatment for relieving pain and reducing oxidative stress in patients. This is reported in a new study in Gastroenterology, which is the official journal of the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) Institute. This should not be a surprising finding because chronic pancreatitis is a progressive inflammatory condition.
The benefit of antioxidants on pain is apparent. The pancreas creates enzymes necessary for the digestion of starch, protein, and fat. The cells responsible for creating insulin are found in the pancreas. When pancreatitis is chronic it can lead to trouble absorbing nutrients, and mild diabetes. Pancreatitis can be acute, recurrent acute, or chronic. This condition occurs many times because of poor health habits.
There are several other reasons that this condition occurs; the most common are gallstones they can block the duct of the pancreas and cause acute pancreatitis. Excessive alcohol causes chronic pancreatitis. Pharmaceuticals such as sulfonamides, corticosteroids, anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and antibiotics like tetracycline and infections such as mumps, hepatitis, rubella, Epstein-Barr virus, and cytomegalovirus can contribute to this condition.
Oxidative stress happens from the production of free radicals, antioxidants help rid the body of free radicals. Oxidative stress can lead or contribute to chronic pancreatitis. Low antioxidant levels mean low levels of vitamin A, C, and E, selenium and carotenoids. Alcohol reduces antioxidants levels, and is associated with being vitamin, and mineral deficient. There is evidence that a high intake of fruits and vegetables either juiced or blended offer protection and can alleviate the symptoms
Diet makes the difference and is the basis of healing. The same health rules apply to all chronic conditions; avoid fried foods, low quality oils, prepackaged foods which contain chemical food additives, and sugars which depletes your body of nutrients. Add to your diet dark leafy greens, and fruits such as blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries. The fruit and vegetables with vivid colors are full of antioxidants.
Poor eating habits are responsible in part; the pancreas is overwhelmed if the diet consists of simple carbohydrates, found in most of the processed foods, including white-flour breads, cakes, cookies, pastas, white rice, instant soup mixes, and cereals.
